When you start a new venture, make owning the exact dotcom your first priority. If the dotcom for the name you want is taken or unaffordable, don't settle for a compromised domain. Keep working on the name until the exact dotcom is attainable.
If your venture doesn't own its exact dotcom domain, you should probably change the name.

Atlassian's founders started with Atlas. Rather than settling for something like GetAtlas.com, TryAtlas.com, Atlas.io or Atlas.net, they kept the constraint that the company should own its exact dotcom, changed the name itself, and arrived at Atlassian.com.
Through Conceptiér, our venture-creation company, we have named more than 25 ventures, sub-ventures, projects, products and brands. Again and again, the challenge was the same: finding a name we genuinely liked with an exact dotcom we could actually own.
We realised there was a genuine need for this exact service.
DeVeere is our naming taste, experience and approach made available commercially.
For our venture-creation company, we wanted a name that conveyed conceiving new concepts and the craft of building them into ventures. The obvious name was Conception. The seller of Conception.com was seeking offers over $2,000,000, which was unaffordable. The obvious alternatives looked like this:
Conceptiér combines concept with atelier. Conceptiér feels elevated and poetic where Conception felt generic.
For our enterprise AI venture, we coined Reasoneer. Reasoneer combines reason with engineer.
We wanted the naming company to feel established, discreet and expensive. More Mayfair private bank or private-client firm than creative agency. The obvious name was Mayfair. The seller of Mayfair.com was asking more than $1,000,000, which was unaffordable. The obvious alternatives looked like this:
So we went back to the name. We liked De Vere for its old English, aristocratic and literary associations.
DeVeere kept what we liked about De Vere, but became its own name. The spelling gave it a more distinctive character while still reading like an established English family name or private firm.
